Direct entry to second year in university

The Diploma of Science provides extra support during your first year of study, and can be followed by direct entry to undergraduate year two of a Bachelor of Science at the University of  Western Australia (UWA).

Fit your studies around the rest of your life and preferred way of working. The Diploma of Science offers you the flexibility to complete your course over eight or 12 months, with a choice of three start dates each year.

Credit transfers and exemptions

As a graduate of the Diploma of Science you may enter into the second year of a UWA Bachelor degree* with one year of advanced standing (academic credit) or eight units (48 credit points) toward the 24 units (144 credit points) course total. You need to achieve at least 50% in all eight units to successfully complete your diploma**.

* Selected majors only for the Diploma of Science

** Students who fail the same subject twice may not be eligible to progress to UWA.

Other subjects that can be studies in the trimester options include: Computing, Molecular Biology, Human Biology A and Human Biology B. The biology units enable you to major in a Biomedical Science area in your Bachelor Degree when you successfully pass your Diploma of Science.

Each unit is worth 6 credit points, for a total of 48 credit points.

Once you successfully achieved a pass in all eight subjects you will be awarded the Diploma of Science, and you will be guaranteed a place in the second year of the UWA Bachelor of Science degree program.

If you want to study a Bachelor of Science major that is not listed above, you might be required to study some additional units associated with your major. The length of your undergraduate degree could change.

Leading to the Master of Professional Engineering

An undergraduate major in Engineering Science gives you time to explore all of your options in engineering before deciding on a specialisation. Once you have learnt the solid foundations from your Bachelor degree, you have the option to progress to the Master of Professional Engineering. This two-year course gives you specialised knowledge of a particular field of engineering and excellent preparation for the professional world.

The faculty’s industry partnerships include Apache, BHP Billiton, Chevron, Clough, Lycopodium, Monadelphous and Rio Tinto.
